Angelo Korsanos - Director

Angelo Korsanos is the Sole Director of Redshift

Angelo’s leadership and contribution to several projects, as both director of Redshift and previously as Senior Designer at two well respected Sydney practices has been awarded at state level Architectural and Construction Industry awards, in both Housing and Public Building Design categories.

Several housing projects have featured in the current NSW Government’s SEPP 65 Apartment Design guide and its predecessor (the RFDC). Angelo has been appointed to Sydney Councils as an urban design advisor where he is consulted to assess urban design merit, residential amenity and compliance with the ADG (Apartment Design Guide). He has been invited to jury the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) ‘Multiple Housing’ awards category and he’s been a member of the AIA’s Built Environment & Housing Committees.

He is currently also the unit coordinator and teacher of the Housing design studios and Architectural Professional Practice at the University of Western Sydney, and he continues to be invited to teach and critique Architecture at several of Sydney’s leading tertiary institutions.

From Angelo

My passion is housing at medium densities, be it one or many. I’ve been researching housing since my University education. Housing is the predominant fabric of the city and my interest extends to its interconnection with the city; the streets, squares and parks that make up that fabric. Inherently, my work extends to urban design and I have been the lead for a range of significant public and community buildings.

I am privileged to live and work in the well established middle ring suburbs of Sydney and understand the aspiration for a house with a garden in spite of the increasingly unattainable economic context. Resolving this conflict is what drives my work.

You wouldn’t imagine what’s required to fulfil good design, the necessary approval(s) and the broader ambitions of any project. I do, and this is why my clients value my effort.

A project is never confined to the boundaries of its site – few architects understand the depth and extent of Architecture’s inherent interconnection. Architecture requires consideration of landscape, street, community, history, future, strategy, well being, environment and economics. If a project doesn’t respond to these then it’s just a dumb building no matter how photogenic it might be.

My mission is to help my clients fulfil the unforeseen potential of their projects while concurrently illuminating that journey and facilitating the process.

I am continually amazed at how Architecture has ‘evolved’ within particular locations, potentially over hundreds of years, adapting to harmonise with its place and environment; beautiful, meaningful and understatedly sustainable. This apparent simplicity is what I seek to embody in our projects but it takes a lot of work, and there are few short cuts.

Outside of the office I enjoy cycling and playing classical guitar. I continue to teach because it is important. I am married to a very capable woman and have 2 talented, hard working children. I’m a health advocate and cancer empathiser to anyone that cares to know or needs support. I attained an ATAR that allowed me to do anything – but I chose Architecture and have been doing it for over 25 years, so don’t underestimate me!

“….your commitment and approach to this project has made it so easy for me and our team. It has been a long process to this stage and to hit this important point so successfully is amazing.”

Rob Short - Cronulla SLSC President

“Now I know why Redshift are Architects and I am not. Our house being a semi-detached concerned us that adding another level might prove difficult. We had ideas for our home which we articulated and Redshift massaged those ideas into a brilliant design. It was a seamless, collaborative effort and Redshift developed a strategy sympathetic to our needs, style and the age of our home. That is why we received a Highly Commended Award in the Marrickville Medal.”

David - Private Client

“My ambition with every project is to produce viable, engaging public and private environments; not just buildings.”
