ALTERATIONS & ADDITIONS

for Private Client
2002
The project involved alterations and additions to a semi-detached dwelling. The long side of the property faces west with the rear of the house orientated towards north. Our clients sought to extend the ground floor to provide an enlarged living area opening out onto a northern terrace, and to provide an Additional bedroom, study and bathroom as an upper level.
The raised roof to the upper floor provides a generosity of scale not generally associated with rooftop additions.

The upper floor is bathed in soft light afforded by the highlight louvres which also serve to relieve rising hot air in summer. A large window allows the main bedroom a view overlooking the street.
Being located in an inner city area, minimising the bulk of the additions to the roof space was critical to obtaining Council approval. Three alternative roof forms were put to Council for consideration. Despite Council DCP’s conservative preference for Dormer windows, the proposal's roof form was approved due to its clear advantage of residential amenity, minimising the impact on adjoining neighbours.
