Surry Hills Alterations & Additions

for Private Developer
2011
Terrace houses are typically dark and poorly ventilated dwellings. The more conventional approach to adding to a terrace is to extend directly off the rear, increasing plan depth and often further exacerbating the lack of natural light and ventilation to the centre of the dwelling. For this project an alternate strategy was adopted, taking advantage of the site’s orientation and rear lane access.
The adjacent rooms address and benefiting from this newly created northern oriented living space, with the primary living rooms bookending the courtyard, ensuring significant natural light & ventilation to each room. The more private rooms, bedrooms & study, are then located within the compartmentalised fabric of the original terrace.
The strategy created a central courtyard, and the dwelling stretched towards the rear, giving more rooms direct access to natural light and ventilation as well as to outdoor spaces. The courtyard & kitchen consequently becomes more than just a utilitarian space, it is a room in it’s own right and integral to the amenity of the majority of the habitable rooms.
