Redshift AA

Architecture + Advocacy

Through research, teaching, advocacy, and the design of real and speculative projects we are able to identify preconceptions in understanding that extend the limits of what is genuinely possible.

Who do we serve?

For many, the reality of a home with a garden translates to a poor version of a free standing house, sandwiched up against the back fence and remote from transport, shops and other facilities. We believe that everyone is entitled to a good home and all that it entails; good layout, climatic response, access to community facilities, public transport, parks and nature.

Our work is driven by satisfying the Australian cultural aspiration for a home with a garden, embodying these qualities at medium densities, and working with clients, builders and policy makers to build homes, urban environments and the meeting places upon which communities are founded.

Driving such outcomes means overcoming social, economic, political and environmental preconceptions.

We serve those that are curious enough to be looking for better outcomes; individuals, families and community organisations invested in their local communities and those interested in building the places for them.

Our History + Future

Redshift was established in 2006 by its two founding directors; Angelo Korsanos & Michael Lewarne. Now under the sole direction of Angelo Korsanos, the practice has developed to fulfil a growing need for greater housing diversity and what is increasingly being referred to as the ‘Missing Middle’.

Redshift was originally founded with an emphasis on servicing clients for multi-housing projects and finding clever solutions for single homes on constrained sites. Our first apartment project in Sydney’s west challenged the norms of what could be done within an economically constrained market to deliver good housing. You can read more about that here in our story about ‘What Defines Us?’.

We continue to challenge what is possible in the design of good housing, but the practice has evolved to place an increasing emphasis on research and advocacy for the purposes of developing new housing types and policy to fulfil Sydney’s ‘Missing Middle’. You’ll find more about that in our Research and Advocacy pages.

What projects do we do?

We work on design projects ranging from small footprint high impact homes, (including alterations and additions or new homes) through to larger scale multi-residential projects and community buildings. Our Multi-residential projects range from 2 to many.

We also regularly work with not-for-profits and community organisations who need assistance in developing strategies for their existing buildings, and tending to their projects; big and small.

Our home page captures a range of projects we undertake and each project portfolio page highlights the benefit and knowledge we bring through experience, and the ideas born from research and previous projects (both real and speculative) undertaken by our offices.
